The nameless blog

I need a name for New York mag's new blog and I'm taking suggestions. Anyone? Anyone?... Bueller?

Posted by Elizabeth Spiers at September 18, 2003 02:22 PM
Comments

-- badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger. (could be shortened to just "Badger")
-- TarNation (as in, "what in tarnation?")
-- Tawker (you know, with that insufferable Brooklyn accent.. but then again, Brooklyn is _so_ last week)
-- I Hate You All You Sniveling Whiny Celebs (but secretly love you at the same time).

More quick (and bad) thoughts.

-- The Anna Chronicles
-- Guestlist me and I'll mention you.
-- A New York State of Unkind

I actually thought yesterday's "New Yawker" suggestion was quite good.

You have two choices:

1. the title brane-extends NY Mag. e.g. "NYmagblog"

2. Or can it be anything? e.g. CosmopolitanScum or Stalker.com

You should know which option your new boss wants before spending too much time thinking about it.

ummm... "YNYN.com. We know NYNY backwards."

Stay away from anything that rhymes with Gawker. Gawker is over. Readers want Elizabeth Spiers not text on a white page. Then again, you could name it Tawker and fail miserably so we could all await your comeback with a new blog called Topic Awe-ker.

Call it The Age of Dissonance. Symbol could be a hand holding up an empty champagne glass for the last drop.

Here are my suggestions for your column's title:

Something stodgy: Metro Online.

Posted by: jason at September 18, 2003 05:01 PM

I think the title of the Ed Klein piece you did, 'Friendly Fire', would actually make a pretty good name for a blog (that is, if it has the kind of mildly nasty metrosnark vibe I'm imagining).

Posted by: Choire at September 18, 2003 05:32 PM

I'm under the (not-so-)subliminal influence of New York Mag's new typography -- a tribute to Spy if ever there was one -- so "Naked City" is my suggestion. Though "Guestlist" is the best one so far.

I also like Guestlist, but I’m also thinking you should try to get your name in the title somehow. This way you build your name recognition and celebrity as the blog’s popularity grows. Also, they can’t replace you as easily if the blog is named after you, so it would be an asset in future bargaining.

That said, I have no ideas. La Dolce Spiers is out. Spiers Report, nope. Spiersfiles…

Posted by: Will at September 18, 2003 07:19 PM

How about Spiers' Mire? It's seems almost ... poetic. Ok, sorry, that was real bad. I am taken with the rhyming thing, though. Surely we can come up with something?

Yeah, definitely you want some common media-freebie word thing....

Plus 1, not Guestlist.

Whatever it's called, use the photo from the AdRants page. You look great: adorably cute and intense with a hint of melancholy, and obvious smarts.

How about this --

That's probably too long for a name -- so let's truncate it to --

"Too Cool for this."

Or --

"Too Cool."

I agree.
